Richland is an unincorporated community in Holmes County, Mississippi. This means it's a small area that doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's located about 4 miles (6 km) northwest of Goodman and 7 miles (11 km) north of Pickens.

Richland's Past: A Look Back

Richland has a long history! From 1842 to 1906, it had its own post office, which helped people send and receive mail. By 1900, Richland was home to a church and a school. The first school, called the Richland Male and Female Academy, opened before 1839. It could teach up to 130 students. Later, in 1848, the Eureka Masonic College took its place.

The Eureka Masonic College: A Historic School

The historic Eureka Masonic College is a very important building in Richland. It's located along Highway 17. This college is famous for being the birthplace of the Order of the Eastern Star (OES), a large group that does charity work. The old schoolhouse also served as a meeting place for Masons, who are part of a fraternal organization. During the American Civil War, a group of soldiers from the Confederate States Army, Company C of the 15th Mississippi Infantry, even used the building.

A Special Gift: The Regimental Flag (1863)

On September 12, 1863, the 1st Mississippi Cavalry of the Confederate States Army received a special gift. The women of Richland gave them their regimental flag. This flag was a symbol of their regiment.

Lieut.–Col. Frank A. Montgomery wrote about this gift in a letter to his wife:

. . . The ladies at Richland, a little village near where we are camped, sent us a very nice battle flag yesterday. It is the first flag we have ever had. It is a blue flag with a red cross extending clear across the flag from the four corners, with white stars in the cross, and a yellow border all round it. It makes a very pretty appearance. . . .

Famous People from Richland

A well-known blues musician named Elmore James was born in Richland. He was born on January 27, 1918. Elmore James became famous for his electric slide guitar playing and his powerful singing.
