Richmond is a small, quiet place in Wheeler County, Oregon. It is an "unincorporated community." This means it is a group of homes and buildings that do not have their own local government like a city does. Richmond is located in the beautiful state of Oregon, in the United States.
Where is Richmond?
Richmond is found on Richmond Road. It is southeast of where Richmond Road meets Oregon Route 207. You can find it between two other towns, Mitchell and Service Creek.
How Richmond Got Its Name
Richmond has an interesting story about how it got its name. A man named R. N. Donnelly gave Richmond its name. He had an argument with another early resident, William Walters. They disagreed about where to build a school.
Donnelly was upset and called Walters "Jeff Davis." This was a nickname linking Walters to Jefferson Davis. Jefferson Davis was the president of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. The Confederacy was a group of southern states that separated from the United States. Donnelly named the place "Richmond" because Richmond, Virginia was the capital city of the Confederacy. It was a way for him to show his strong feelings about the argument.
Life in Early Richmond
Richmond used to have its own post office. It was open for many years, from 1899 until 1952.
In the early days, Richmond had several important buildings. These included a school, a store, and a Methodist Church. There was also a hall for the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, which was a friendly club. Several homes were also part of the community. Over time, these buildings were left empty.
In 1901, a big event happened in Richmond. Nearly 450 people came to the annual meeting of the Wheeler County Pioneer Association. This shows that Richmond was once a busy and important place for the people living in the area.
