Discover Richmond Hill!

Richmond Hill is a quiet place with an interesting past. It's named after a special home that once belonged to a very important judge. Let's learn more about this historic spot!

What is an Unincorporated Community?

An unincorporated community is a place where people live together, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's usually governed by the county it's in. So, Richmond Hill is part of Yadkin County.

A Place Named After a Judge

The community of Richmond Hill got its name from the home of Richmond Mumford Pearson. He was a very important person! He served as the Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. This means he was the main judge in North Carolina's highest court.

In 1848, Judge Pearson started a special school called the Richmond Hill Law School right in his own home. This was a great spot because it was close to Rockford, which was the county seat back then.

The Famous Law School and Park

Judge Pearson's brick home was built in 1861. It's a really old and historic building! In the 1970s, the home was carefully restored to look like it did in the past. Today, this historic house is the main part of the Richmond Hill Law School & Nature Park. The park covers about 30 acres (about 120,000 square meters) and is a great place to visit. Because of its history, the home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. This list helps protect important historical sites.

Other Important Places

Richmond Hill is also home to the Richmond Hill Baptist Church, which was started in 1889. Another interesting place in the community was the New Creation Monastery. It was founded in 1994 by Father John Hoover, who lived there as a Benedictine monk.
