Rick Laliberte's Political Journey
Starting in Politics
Rick Laliberte first became a Member of Parliament in the 1997 federal election. He ran as a candidate for the New Democratic Party (NDP). The NDP is one of Canada's major political parties.
Changing Parties
On September 27, 2000, Rick Laliberte made a big change. He decided to leave the New Democratic Party. He then joined the Liberal Party of Canada. This move is sometimes called "crossing the floor" in politics. It means a politician changes their political party while they are already in office.
Re-election and Later Years
After joining the Liberal Party, Rick Laliberte was re-elected in the 2000 federal election. He continued to represent the Churchill River area. However, before the 2004 election, he left the Liberal Party.
In the 2004 election, he ran as an independent candidate. This means he did not belong to any political party. He did not win re-election that year. He finished fourth, behind candidates from the NDP, Liberals, and the winning Conservative candidate, Jeremy Harrison.
