The Rif Dimashq Governorate (which means "Governorate of the Countryside of Damascus" in Arabic) is one of the 14 main regions, or provinces, in Syria. It is located in the southwest part of the country.
This region shares its borders with several other Syrian governorates. To the southwest, it borders Quneitra, Daraa, and al-Suwayda. To the north, it borders Homs. It also shares international borders with Lebanon to the west and Jordan to the south.
Rif Dimashq Governorate completely surrounds the city of Damascus, which is the capital of Syria. The area of this governorate is about 18,032 square kilometers. In 2004, its population was recorded as 2,273,074 people.
Districts and Local Areas
The Rif Dimashq Governorate is divided into ten smaller areas called districts (manatiq in Arabic). Until February 2009, there were nine districts. A new district, Qudsaya, was created from parts of Markaz Rif Dimashq and Al-Zabadani districts.
These districts are further divided into 37 sub-districts (nawahi). One small village in the Damascus countryside, called Aqraba, is known for its fields and fruit orchards.
