Rikuchū Province facts for kids
Rikuchū Province (陸中国, Rikuchū no kuni) was an old area in Japan. It was like a state or region before the modern system of prefectures began. You could find it in what is now Iwate and Akita prefectures, on the big island of Honshū.
Sometimes, Rikuchū Province was called Rikushū (陸州). This name was also used for two other nearby provinces: Rikuzen Province and Mutsu Province. Rikuchū Province existed for only a short time, from 1868 to 1872.
A Short History of Rikuchū
During the Meiji period (a time of big changes in Japan), the old provinces like Rikuchū were changed into new areas called prefectures. This happened in the 1870s. Because of these changes, maps of Japan were updated to show the new prefectures instead of the old provinces.
