Education in the Rio Area
Students from Rio attend schools in the ROWVA School District #208. This district includes five main towns: Rio, Oneida, Wataga, Victoria, and Altona.
Where Students Go to School
- Younger students (Pre-Kindergarten to 2nd grade) go to ROWVA Central in Oneida.
- 3rd and 4th graders attend ROWVA West in Wataga.
- 5th and 6th graders go to ROWVA East in Altona.
- Junior high students (7th and 8th graders) are in Oneida.
- High school students (9th to 12th graders) also attend school in Oneida.
ROWVA Central, ROWVA Jr. High, and ROWVA High School are all connected in one large building.
School Spirit and Sports
The school colors for ROWVA are black, gold, and white. Their mascot is a tiger. The school also takes part in sports teams with other nearby schools. For example, they have a sports team with Galva called the Mid-County Cougars. Their colors are black, blue, and white. They play sports like golf, cross country, and football together.
Rio's Old Elementary School
Rio used to have its own elementary school. It was opened in 1922 and was located in the center of town. However, the school closed in 2004. This was because it cost a lot to heat and cool the building, and there were not many students (only 36 students from 1st to 6th grade when it closed).
After it closed, a person named Mike Gillette bought the building. He allowed local children to use the playground equipment for a while, but it has since been removed. The building has not been turned into a business and still looks much the same from the outside.
Community Park and Baseball
The village of Rio owns a baseball field and the land next to it. They have turned this area into a park for everyone to enjoy. The park has a public pavilion and a concession stand for baseball games. There is also a large playground structure that the village paid for. It was built by community volunteers in July 2012.
