Rio Haryanto (born on January 22, 1993) is an Indonesian former racing driver and businessman. He is famous for being the only Indonesian driver to ever compete in Formula One. He raced in 12 Grand Prix races in 2016.
Rio was born and grew up in Surakarta, Central Java. He started his racing journey in karting, winning many championships across Asia. Later, he moved on to bigger racing cars called "junior formulae" in 2008. He won his first major title in 2009, taking home the Formula BMW Pacific Championship with the Meritus team.

Early Racing Days
Racing in Asia
Rio started his car racing career in 2008. He competed in three different series in Asia: the Asian Formula Renault Challenge, Formula Asia 2.0, and Formula BMW Pacific. He did best in the FAsia 2.0 series, winning two races and finishing third overall.
In 2009, he raced in several series again, but his main focus was the Formula BMW Pacific championship. He was amazing, winning 11 out of 15 races with the Meritus team. This included four straight wins at his home track, Sentul, where he also got pole positions and fastest laps.
GP3 Series Adventures
In 2010, Rio moved to Europe to race full-time in the GP3 Series. This series supports Formula One races. He joined the Manor Racing team. In his first year, he won a race in Turkey and got two more podium finishes. He ended up in fifth place in the championship, showing he was a rising star.
He stayed with the team in 2011, which was then called Marussia Manor Racing. He won two more races, one at the Nürburgring and another at the Hungaroring. Both of these wins happened in the rain, which earned him a reputation as a great driver in wet conditions.
Auto GP Challenge
Besides GP3, Rio also raced in the Auto GP series in 2011 with the DAMS team. He won a race in Valencia, Spain, and finished seventh in the drivers' standings. His team, DAMS, won the teams' championship that year.
GP2 Series Journey

Rio made his first appearance in the GP2 Series in 2011. He then raced full-time in 2012 with the Carlin team. He was the first Indonesian driver to reach this level of motorsport in over a decade. In his first season, he got one fastest lap and one pole position in wet conditions at Spa, proving again he was good in the rain. He finished 14th in the championship.
In 2013, he got his first podium finish in the GP2 Series at Silverstone. He continued to show his skills, getting another podium in 2014 at Monaco.
His best year in GP2 was 2015 when he joined the Campos team. He won three races that season: one in Bahrain, one at the Red Bull Ring, and another at Silverstone. He finished the 2015 GP2 Series in an impressive fourth place overall.
Formula One Dream
Rio had been connected to the Virgin/Marussia/Manor team for a long time. In 2010, he even got to test with Virgin in Abu Dhabi because he was the highest-ranked Manor driver in GP3. In 2012, he tested for Marussia again and completed enough laps to get a special license called a "superlicence," which you need to race in Formula One. He was the first Indonesian driver to get one!
Racing for Manor (2016)
On February 18, 2016, it was officially announced that Rio Haryanto would be a driver for Manor Racing in the 2016 Formula One season. He raced alongside Pascal Wehrlein.
His first race was the 2016 Australian Grand Prix. It started a bit rough when he had a small crash in the pit lane during practice. He had to start the race with a penalty and later retired from the race due to a car problem.
In the 2016 Bahrain Grand Prix, he finished 17th. He continued to race, but his car was not very fast. He had a career-best finish of 15th at the 2016 Monaco Grand Prix.
Unfortunately, on August 10, 2016, Manor announced that Rio would become a reserve driver. This was because he couldn't get enough sponsorship money. The Indonesian government's promised funds were blocked. Esteban Ocon took his place for the rest of the season. After the season, Manor Racing faced financial problems and left Formula One. Rio was the only driver from the team who didn't get to race in Formula One in 2017.
After Formula One
Sports Car Racing
After his time in Formula One, Rio continued racing in sports car events.
- In 2018, he raced in the SIC888 Race in Shanghai, finishing 5th with his teammates.
- In 2019, he competed in the Blancpain GT World Challenge Asia and the Asian Le Mans Series with T2 Motorsports, driving a Ferrari.
About Rio's Life
Rio Haryanto was born in Solo to Sinyo Haryanto and Indah Pennywati. His parents are from Surakarta and are of Chinese-Indonesian descent. He has three older brothers, Roy, Ricky, and Rian, who also raced cars when they were younger.
In 2014, Rio earned a business degree from Anglia Ruskin University. After his Formula One career, he started working in his family's printing company, Kiky. He also owns two restaurants in Central Java: Grandis Barn Restaurant and Teakyard Restaurant.
Rio and his family are devout Muslims. Before races, he would often put a special verse from the Quran, called the Throne Verse, in his car and read it as part of his race routine. His family also owns an Islamic boarding school called a Pesantren.
Rio supports his hometown football club, Persis Solo.
On December 5, 2024, Rio Haryanto married Athina Papadimitriou, who is the niece of Sandiaga Uno, a well-known Indonesian politician.
