Rio Haryanto was born on January 22, 1993. He is an Indonesian businessman and a former racing driver. He competed in 12 Formula One races in 2016. He is famous for being Indonesia's first and only Formula One driver. He was also the first Muslim driver to compete in the series.
Rio grew up in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. He started his racing journey in karting, which is like go-karting. He won many championships across Asia before moving on to bigger racing cars in 2008. He won his first major title in 2009, which was the Formula BMW Pacific Championship.

Early Racing Career
Rio Haryanto began his car racing career in 2008. He competed in three different series in Asia. These included the Asian Formula Renault Challenge and Formula Asia 2.0. He did very well in the FAsia 2.0 series, winning two races and finishing third overall.
In 2009, he raced in several series again. His main focus was the Formula BMW Pacific championship. He was amazing in this series, winning 11 out of 15 races! He even had a perfect streak of four wins, pole positions, and fastest laps at his home track in Sentul.
GP3 Series Adventures
In 2010, Rio moved to Europe to race in the GP3 Series. This series supports Formula One races, helping young drivers get noticed. He joined the Manor Racing team. In his first year, he won a race in Istanbul and got two more podium finishes. He ended up in fifth place in the championship, which was a great start! Experts even called his performance "one of the surprises of the season."
He stayed with the team in 2011. He won two more races, one at the Nürburgring and another at the Hungaroring. Both of these wins happened in rainy conditions. This earned him a reputation as a "wet-weather specialist," meaning he was very good at driving in the rain.
Auto GP Experience
In 2011, while still racing in GP3, Rio also competed in the Auto GP series with the DAMS team. He won a race in Valencia and finished seventh in the overall standings. His team, DAMS, won the teams' championship that year.
GP2 Series Journey
Rio Haryanto started racing full-time in the GP2 Series in 2012 with the Carlin team. This was a big step, as GP2 is another important series for drivers hoping to reach Formula One. He was the first Indonesian driver to race at this level in many years.
In his first GP2 season, he earned a pole position in the rain at Spa, showing his skill in wet conditions again. He finished 14th in the championship. In 2013, he got his first GP2 podium finish at Silverstone. He earned another podium in 2014 at Monaco.
In 2015, Rio joined Campos Racing. This was his best GP2 season! He won three races and finished fourth in the championship with 138 points. These wins showed he was a strong contender.
Formula One Dream
Rio Haryanto had been connected to the Manor Racing team for a long time. He even got to test a Formula One car for Virgin (which later became Manor) in 2010. In 2012, he tested for Marussia (another name for the same team) and earned his superlicence. This special licence is needed to race in Formula One.
Manor Racing (2016)
On February 18, 2016, it was officially announced that Rio Haryanto would be a driver for Manor Racing in the 2016 Formula One season. He made his debut at the 2016 Australian Grand Prix. His first race had a tough start when he had a small collision in the pit lane during practice. He later had to retire from the race due to a car problem.
Rio continued to race for Manor. He finished 17th in Bahrain and 21st in China. In Russia, he was involved in a first-lap crash. His best finish was 15th place in Monaco. He often finished as the last classified car, meaning he completed the race but was behind everyone else. His teammate, Pascal Wehrlein, scored Manor's only point of the season, showing a gap in performance.
Unfortunately, Rio's time in Formula One ended early. On August 10, 2016, Manor confirmed that he would become a reserve driver. This happened because the money promised by the Indonesian government for his sponsorship was blocked. Esteban Ocon took his place. After the 2016 season, the Manor team faced financial difficulties and eventually closed down. Rio was the only driver from that team who did not find a spot on the 2017 Formula One grid.
Life After Formula One
After his Formula One career, Rio Haryanto moved into sports car racing.
2018 Sports Car Racing
In 2018, Rio took part in the SIC888 Race in Shanghai, China. He teamed up with two other Indonesian drivers, Anderson Tanoto and Andrew Haryanto. They drove an Audi R8 LMS GT4 car and finished the 6-hour race in fifth place.
2019 Sports Car Racing
In 2019, Rio competed in the Blancpain GT World Challenge Asia with T2 Motorsports. He drove a Ferrari 488 GT3 car. He also raced in the 2019-20 Asian Le Mans Series with the same team and car. He finished ninth in the driver's championship for that series.
Personal Life
Rio Haryanto was born in Solo, Indonesia. His parents are Sinyo Haryanto and Indah Pennywati. He has three older brothers: Roy, Ricky, and Rian. His brothers and father were also involved in racing.
In 2014, Rio earned a business degree from Anglia Ruskin University. After his racing career, he started working in his family's printing company, Kiky. He oversees the security printing part of the business. Rio also owns two restaurants: Grandis Barn Restaurant in Surakarta and Teakyard Restaurant in Colomadu.
Rio and his family are devout Muslims. Before races, he would often put a special verse from the Quran, called the Throne Verse, in his car's cockpit and read it. His family also owns an Islamic boarding school.
Rio Haryanto is a big fan of his hometown football club, Persis Solo.
On December 5, 2024, Rio Haryanto married Athina Papadimitriou. She is the niece of Sandiaga Uno, a well-known Indonesian politician.
