The River Avill is a small river located in Somerset, England. It flows through the beautiful Exmoor National Park.

The River Avill begins its journey on the eastern slopes of Dunkery Beacon. This is the highest point on Exmoor. From there, the river flows north. It passes through the villages of Timberscombe and Dunster. Finally, the River Avill reaches the Bristol Channel at Dunster Beach. The river is found southwest of Minehead and north of Taunton.

The River Avill is known for a very old and special bridge. This bridge is called Gallox Bridge.

Gallox Bridge: A Medieval Crossing

Gallox Bridge is in the village of Dunster. It was built way back in the 15th century. This makes it a very old and important part of history. The bridge is made of stone and has two arches. It crosses over the River Avill.

What Makes Gallox Bridge Special?

Gallox Bridge is a narrow packhorse bridge. This means it was built for horses carrying goods, not for cars. It is about 1.2 metres (3.9 ft) wide where you walk. The whole bridge is about 1.9 metres (6.2 ft) wide and 13.5 metres (44.3 ft) long. It was first called Gallows Bridge. Today, it is a Grade I listed building. This means it is a very important historical structure. It is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The River Near Dunster Castle

After passing Gallox Bridge, the River Avill flows around Dunster New Park. This park surrounds the famous Dunster Castle. The river adds to the beautiful scenery around the castle grounds.

Railway Bridge Over the Avill

Close to Dunster Beach, the river goes under another bridge. This bridge is part of the West Somerset Railway. This is a heritage railway line.

The Avill's Musical Inspiration

The River Avill also has a connection to music. It helped inspire the famous hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful. This shows how beautiful and peaceful the river and its surroundings are.
