Where the River Eau Flows
The River Eau starts near a place called Harpswell. This area is at the bottom of the Lincolnshire Edge. The river then flows until it joins the River Trent at Susworth. The part of the Trent it joins is affected by tides.
How the River Drains
The River Eau is special because it drains into the tidal River Trent using only gravity. This means it flows downhill naturally. Many other rivers that join the tidal Trent need special pumps to push their water out when the tide is high. The Eau does not need these pumps. It simply waits for the tide to go out before it empties its water.
The River's Basin
The area of land that collects water for the River Eau is called its catchment or basin. This area covers about 125 square kilometers (48 square miles). The River Eau's basin is located between the Bottesford Beck to the north and the River Witham to the south and east.
The River Eau and Scotter
The River Eau flows right through the village of Scotter. This village has experienced flooding from the river in the past. The most recent flood happened in June 2007.
Importance for Drainage
The River Eau is very important for draining the flat farmland around it. About 20 square kilometers (8 square miles) of land in the Gainsborough area depend on the Eau to carry away excess water. This helps keep the fields from getting too wet.
Who Manages the River?
The smaller drains that flow into the River Eau are looked after by the Internal Drainage Board. However, the River Eau itself is a "Main River." This means the Environment Agency is responsible for its care and maintenance.
Other Streams Joining the Eau
The River Eau has several smaller streams that flow into it. These are called its tributaries. The main tributaries of the River Eau are:
- Northorpe Beck
- Manton Sewer
- Dar Beck
