The River Glenderamackin is a river in Cumbria, England. It is also sometimes called the Glendermackin or Glendermackin Beck. This river is one of the main streams that come together to form the River Greta.

Where Does the River Start?

The River Glenderamackin begins its journey on Mungrisdale Common. This area is located north of a mountain called Blencathra. The river collects water from the eastern and southern parts of this mountain.

The River's Path

The river first flows towards the east. Then, it turns north before making a sharp turn south near the village of Mungrisdale. It flows almost all the way around the bottom of Souther Fell.

Later on, the river turns west. This happens north of Hutton Moor End. Another stream called Trout Beck joins the Glenderamackin at Wolt Bridge. This bridge is south of Lowside.

Not far from there, the river gets even bigger. It is joined by the waters of Mosedale Beck. This meeting point is close to Dobson's Bridge. The Glenderamackin then continues flowing past the village of Threlkeld. At this point, it meets St. John's Beck. When these two rivers join, they officially form the River Greta.

What Does the Name Mean?

The name "Glenderamackin" has a very old history. It comes from an ancient language called Brythonic. This language is related to modern Welsh.

In Welsh, the name glyndwfr y mochyn means 'the river valley of the pig'. So, "Glenderamackin" likely means 'the river valley of the pig'.

This meaning makes sense because of another nearby place. The village of Mungrisdale, through which the river flows, also has a name related to pigs. Its name comes from Norse and means something similar.

Another river, Glenderaterra Beck, also has the "glendera" part in its name. This river also joins the River Greta not long after it starts.
