Discovering Riverdale's Past

How Riverdale Began

Riverdale has an interesting history that started with farms. In 1912, a man named Col. G. W. French started Iowana Dairy Farms here. He had one of the biggest and best herds of Holstein cattle in the United States.

After Col. French passed away, his farm was split. Glenn Moore took over one part, calling it Iowana Milk Farm. G. Decker French managed the other part, known as Iowana Holstein Farm.

The Aluminum Company Arrives

A major change happened in 1946 when the Aluminum Company of America, also known as ALCOA, moved to the area. They built a new factory, which was finished by mid-1948. The factory started its operations in 1949.

Becoming an Independent City

Riverdale officially became a city on December 27, 1950. The nearby city of Bettendorf challenged this decision for three years. However, the Iowa Supreme Court decided that Riverdale could be its own independent city. This happened on February 10, 1953.

Understanding the Quad Cities Area

Riverdale is a part of the larger Quad Cities community. This area was first called the Tri-Cities, including Moline, Rock Island, and Davenport. Later, East Moline was added, and it became known as the Quad Cities.

Today, the Quad Cities includes several larger cities. These are Davenport, Iowa; Bettendorf, Iowa; Moline, Illinois; Rock Island, Illinois; and East Moline, Illinois. Many smaller cities are also part of this community. These include Riverdale in Iowa and Silvis in Illinois. The entire Quad Cities area has a population of over 380,000 people.
