History of Riverdale
The Village of Riverdale officially became a village in 1893. This means it was given the power to govern itself.
Early Industries in Riverdale
In 1904, a man named Charles Pope bought land in Riverdale. He wanted to build a factory to make sugar from beets. Before this, the land was used by a company that made yeast for baking.
The beet sugar factory opened in 1905. It could make a lot of sugar each day. Later, in 1922, Pope's family sold the factory. The new owners started making sugar from cane, which came from places like Cuba. They wanted to make the factory one of the biggest sugar producers in the Midwest.
However, in 1947, a different company took over. This new company, called The Chromium Mining and Smelting Corporation, worked with metals instead of sugar.
