Riverwoods is a village located in Lake County, Illinois, in the United States. It was founded in 1959 by Jay Peterson, an important businessman who worked with steel. The village is built along the banks of the Des Plaines River.
According to the 2020 census, about 3,790 people live in Riverwoods. It is home to the main offices of companies like Discover Financial and CCH. You can also find Orphans of the Storm here, which is an animal shelter started in 1928 by the famous dancer Irene Castle. In the past, Riverwoods used to have a fun yearly event called "Arts & Riverwoods" festival.

Homes and Buildings in Riverwoods
Riverwoods has many interesting homes built in the middle of the 20th century. More than 40 of these houses were designed by Edward Humrich, an architect known for his "prairie modernist" style. This style often uses natural materials and blends with the landscape.
Recently, some older homes have been torn down to build new ones. Because there are no special rules in Riverwoods to protect old buildings, groups like the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois have worried about too much new building. They said in 2006 that Riverwoods was one of the places near Chicago most at risk of losing its unique older homes.
