Where the River Flows: Geography

The Rivière aux Écorces du Milieu is surrounded by several other important water areas. Knowing these helps us understand its journey:

River's Beginning: Its Source

The Rivière aux Écorces du Milieu starts at Lake Chavigny. This lake is about 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) long and sits at an elevation of 824 metres (2,703 ft) above sea level. It's located in a forest area within the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve.

The source of the river is found:

  • 1.3 kilometres (0.81 mi) east of Lake Germain.
  • 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) east of Franchère Lake.
  • 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) south-west of the Pikauba River.
  • 18.9 kilometres (11.7 mi) north-east of where the Rivière aux Écorces du Milieu joins the main Rivière aux Écorces.

River's Journey: Its Course

From its start at Lake Chavigny, the Rivière aux Écorces du Milieu flows for about 29.3 kilometres (18.2 mi). It drops about 260 metres (850 ft) in height along its path, all within the forest.

Here's how its journey generally goes:

  • Upper Part: For the first 4.6 kilometres (2.9 mi), the river flows south, then west. It passes through Petit Lac Chavigny and Day Lake. Day Lake gets water from Lake Germain and Lake Brouillard. The river also crosses the southern part of Lac Franchère.
  • Middle Part: Over the next 13.9 kilometres (8.6 mi), the river continues west. It goes through rapids and widens into Lake Arteau. It then flows around a mountain and is joined by Dei Stream and Gravel Stream. Further along, it passes a marshy area and gets water from Lac Monette. It also flows through the southern part of Lake Sénécal.
  • Lower Part: For the final 10.8 kilometres (6.7 mi), the river flows southwest in a deep valley. It is joined by Chaperon Stream. It then curves northwest and southwest, passing around mountains and through marshy areas, before reaching its end.

River's End: Its Mouth

The Rivière aux Écorces du Milieu empties into the Rivière aux Écorces. This meeting point is located:

From this point, the water continues its long journey:

  • It follows the Rivière aux Écorces for about 98.5 kilometres (61.2 mi) north.
  • Then, it joins the Pikauba River for about 10.6 kilometres (6.6 mi) north.
  • Next, it flows through Kenogami Lake for 17.6 kilometres (10.9 mi) northeast, reaching the barrage de Portage-des-Roches dam.
  • After the dam, it follows the Chicoutimi River for 26.2 kilometres (16.3 mi) east and northeast.
  • Finally, it joins the Saguenay River for 114.6 kilometres (71.2 mi) east, until it reaches Tadoussac. Here, the Saguenay River merges with the Saint Lawrence Estuary, which leads to the Atlantic Ocean.
