The Rivière aux Frênes starts near the village of Joly. Its source is about 1.1 kilometers southeast of the village.

From its start, the river flows for 9.0 kilometers. It travels between the Henri River to the south and the rivière aux Cèdres to the north. As it flows westward, the river drops about 32 meters in elevation. Along its path, it crosses a railway line, local roads, and even Highway 20.

The Rivière aux Frênes joins the Henri River in the town of Val-Alain. This meeting point is upstream from where the rivière aux Cèdres also joins the Henri River. It's also about 2.0 kilometers northwest of exit 266 on Highway 20.
