The Rivière des Poitras is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Morigeau River. The Morigeau River then joins the rivière du Sud (Montmagny), which eventually flows into the mighty St. Lawrence River.

This river runs through two towns: Saint-Pierre-de-la-Rivière-du-Sud and Saint-François-de-la-Rivière-du-Sud. Both are located in the Montmagny Regional County Municipality. This area is part of the Chaudière-Appalaches region of Quebec.

Where Does the River Flow?

Rivers are part of larger water systems called watersheds. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a single river or lake. The Poitras river has several important neighbors in its watershed.

The River's Journey

The Poitras river begins its journey in the western part of Saint-Pierre-de-la-Rivière-du-Sud. Its source is near a country road. This starting point is about 10.9 kilometers (6.8 miles) south of the town of Montmagny. It's also 8.1 kilometers (5 miles) east of a small community called Morigeau.

The river flows for about 12.3 kilometers (7.6 miles). It generally runs parallel to the Morigeau River, staying on its south side.

River Sections

  • The first 6.1 kilometers (3.8 miles) flow west through Saint-Pierre-de-la-Rivière-du-Sud. This section ends at the border of Saint-François-de-la-Rivière-du-Sud.
  • Next, it flows 1.9 kilometers (1.2 miles) west until it reaches another country road.
  • Finally, it turns northwest for 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) before joining the Morigeau River.

The Poitras river meets the Morigeau River on its southeast side. This meeting point, called a confluence, is about 1.7 kilometers (1.1 miles) northeast of a small area known as Martineau hamlet.
