Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Robert Adams (born 1540, died 1595) was an important English expert in the 1500s. He worked for Queen Elizabeth I. Robert Adams was a talented architect, which means he designed buildings. He was also an engraver, someone who creates pictures by cutting designs into metal or wood. Plus, he was a surveyor, meaning he measured land and buildings. His father was Clement Adams.

What Did Robert Adams Do?

Even though Robert Adams designed many buildings, none of them are still standing today. But we can still see some of his amazing plans and engravings! These old drawings help us understand his work.

Maps and Drawings

In 1588, Robert Adams drew a big map of a place called Middleburgh. He also made a special drawing on a roll of parchment (a type of animal skin used for writing). This drawing was called "Thamesis Descriptio." It showed the River Thames and how far cannons could shoot from different places, like Tilbury Fort all the way to London.

The Spanish Armada

Robert Adams also created famous drawings and engravings about the Spanish Armada. This was a huge fleet of Spanish ships that tried to invade England in 1588. His pictures showed what happened along the British coasts during this important event. These engravings were later published by a person named Augustine Ryther in 1589.

Robert Adams's Legacy

Robert Adams passed away when he was 55 years old. He was buried in a church in Greenwich. A special message was placed there to remember him.

His Memorial

The message on his memorial was written in Latin, but it means this: "To the excellent Robert Adams, who looked after the royal buildings and was very skilled at architecture. He died in 1595. Simon Basil, who took over his job, put up this monument here in 1601."

This shows that Robert Adams was highly respected for his work with royal buildings and his skills in architecture.
