Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Robert Brown (born December 21, 1773 – died June 10, 1858) was an important Scottish scientist who studied plants. He was a botanist, which means he was an expert in plants. Brown made many big discoveries that helped us understand plants better, especially by using a microscope.

Discovering Plant Secrets

Robert Brown used a microscope to look very closely at plants. This helped him see tiny parts that no one had noticed before.

Inside Plant Cells

Brown was one of the first to describe the cell nucleus. This is like the control center inside plant cells. He also saw something called cytoplasmic streaming, which is when the jelly-like stuff inside a cell moves around.

Brownian Motion Explained

One day, while looking at tiny pollen grains in water, Brown noticed they were jiggling around randomly. This movement, which he couldn't explain at first, is now called Brownian motion. Scientists later figured out it's caused by tiny water molecules bumping into the pollen.

How Plants Reproduce

Brown also studied how plants make new plants. He looked closely at pollination (how pollen moves from one part of a flower to another) and fertilisation (how plants combine cells to create seeds).

Different Kinds of Plants

He was the first to clearly tell the difference between two big groups of plants:

  • Gymnosperms: These are plants like pine trees that have "naked" seeds, meaning their seeds are not inside a fruit.
  • Angiosperms: These are flowering plants that have seeds enclosed inside a fruit or a pod.

Studying Pollen and Plant Families

Brown also started one of the first studies of palynology, which is the study of pollen and spores. He also helped organize plants into groups, a field called taxonomy. He identified many plant groups that scientists still use today.

Exploring Australia's Plants

Robert Brown traveled to Australia with a famous explorer named Matthew Flinders. While there, he collected and studied many new and exciting plants. Based on what he found, he identified many new plant genera (groups of similar species) and species (specific types of plants) that were unique to Australia.
