Robert Butler's Early Life and Art Journey
Robert Butler was born in a small town called Baxley, Georgia, on September 25, 1943. His mother, Annie Talifer Butler, raised him. She taught him important lessons about faith and kindness. Robert often said his childhood was "classically American."
Moving to Florida and Finding Inspiration
In 1947, when Robert was four years old, his family moved to Okeechobee, Florida. Here, he grew up exploring the forests and waters of the Florida Everglades. He especially loved Lake Okeechobee. These natural places became a big part of his paintings. Robert wanted his art to help save the nature he saw around him every day.
Starting His Career as an Artist
Robert Butler began his professional art career in 1968. At first, he would sell his paintings by going door-to-door or setting up a display by the side of the road. He was part of a group of artists who became known as "The Highwaymen." They got this name because they traveled along Florida's highways to sell their art.
Robert worked hard to improve his painting skills. He created more than one hundred paintings each year! Even though he didn't go to a special art school, Robert developed his own unique style. His paintings often showed landscapes with dramatic lighting.
An Artist Honored by Royalty
Robert Butler was even honored by a member of the Royal Family of Ethiopia, Prince Ermias Sahle Selassie. He was made a Knight of the Imperial Order of the Star of Honor of the Ethiopian Empire. This special award is given to people who have done great things for the Ethiopian Empire.
Later Life and Passing
When Robert Butler was in his 40s, he was diagnosed with diabetes. This illness sadly led to his death on March 19, 2014. He was 70 years old and passed away in Lakeland, Florida.
