Early Life and Education
Robert Charnock came from a family in Warwickshire, England. He went to Adams' Grammar School for his education. Later, he studied at Magdalen College, Oxford. He became a fellow, which is like a senior member, at his college. Charnock also became a Roman Catholic priest.
The Magdalen College Dispute
In 1687, a disagreement happened at Magdalen College. This was between King James II and the college fellows. The king wanted to choose a new president for the college. Robert Charnock supported the king's choices, first Anthony Farmer and then Samuel Parker.
Most of the fellows were forced to leave the college in November 1687. However, Charnock was one of the few who stayed. He became a dean and then the vice-president under the new rules. But he was also removed from his position in October 1688.
A Plot Against the King
After leaving the college, Charnock either lived in France with the Stuarts royal family or secretly worked in England. He and another person, Sir George Barclay, planned something big. They tried to arrange an attempt to harm King William III. This happened near Turnham Green in February 1696. The plan was not successful.
The Jacobites asked Charnock to go see King James II. They wanted to ask for 10,000 French soldiers. However, King James II said no. The French needed their troops because of problems with King William III in another area called the Low Countries.
Sir George Barclay managed to escape. But Robert Charnock was caught. He was put on trial and found responsible for his actions. He faced severe consequences on 18 March 1696.
The Blunderbuss
The Tower of London Armoury has a special weapon called a blunderbuss. It is kept in the White Tower. This blunderbuss is labeled as belonging to Robert Charnock. It is believed he intended to use it in the plot against King William III.
