Robert Herbin: A Football Legend
Robert Herbin was born in Paris, France. When he was a child, his family moved to Nice. His father was a musician who played the trombone at the Opéra de Nice. This early move shaped his life.
Early Life and Playing Career
Herbin started playing football at a local club in Nice. When he was 18 years old, he joined AS Saint-Étienne. This was a big step for him. He quickly became a key player for the team.
As a player, Herbin helped Saint-Étienne win five Ligue 1 titles. Ligue 1 is the top football league in France. He was a strong defender and also played as a midfielder. His skills helped his team become one of the best in France.
Becoming a Manager
After his playing career, Robert Herbin became a football manager. He took over as manager of AS Saint-Étienne in 1972. He continued their success, leading the team to win four more Ligue 1 titles. This made him one of the most successful managers in French football history.
One of his most famous moments as a manager was leading Saint-Étienne to the 1976 European Cup Final. This was a huge achievement, but they sadly lost to FC Bayern Munich in the final match. Even though they lost, reaching the final was a big deal for the club and its fans.
Challenges and Later Career
In 1983, Robert Herbin left Saint-Étienne. There were some financial problems at the club, and he was dismissed. Soon after, he became the manager of Olympique Lyonnais, a rival team. He tried his best, but the team was relegated to a lower league.
After his time with Lyon, he managed a team in Saudi Arabia called Al-Nassr FC. He also worked with RC Strasbourg Alsace. In 1987, he returned to Saint-Étienne, hoping to bring back their glory days. However, he couldn't repeat their past success during his second time as manager. He later managed Red Star F.C. before retiring.
His Unique Personality
Robert Herbin was easy to recognize because of his bright red hair. He was also known for being a very quiet and private person. Because of his reserved nature, people gave him the nickname "Le Sphinx." A sphinx is a mythical creature known for being mysterious and silent.
