Robert Jackson's Early Life and Military Service
Robert Jackson was born in 1921. Before starting his sports career, he bravely served his country. He was a soldier during World War II. After the war ended, he came home and began his college education.
College and Professional Football Player
After his military service, Robert Jackson went to North Carolina A&T State University. He played college football there from 1946 to 1950. He was a talented player, playing both as a fullback and a linebacker.
Jackson made history in 1950. He was the first player from a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to be drafted by an National Football League (NFL) team. The New York Giants picked him in the 16th round of the 1950 NFL Draft. He played for the New York Giants for two years.
A Long Career in Coaching
After his time in the NFL, Robert Jackson continued his education. He earned his master's degree from Springfield College. He then spent over 40 years of his life coaching. He loved helping young people become better athletes and students.
Jackson coached at several universities. He worked at Johnson C. Smith University, St. Augustine's University, Shaw University, and Texas Southern University.
