Robert Kirkman (born November 30, 1978) is an American writer and producer. He is famous for creating popular comic books. These include The Walking Dead and Invincible. He also helped create TV shows based on his comics.

Kirkman is a partner at Image Comics. This is a big comic book company. In 2010, he started his own company, Skybound Entertainment. This company helps turn comics into TV shows and movies.

Early Life and Interests

Robert Kirkman was born in Lexington, Kentucky. He grew up in Cynthiana, Kentucky.

From a young age, Kirkman loved zombie films. He enjoyed movies like the Night of the Living Dead series. He also liked zombie video games such as Resident Evil.

Starting His Comic Career

Kirkman's first comic book was Battle Pope in 2000. He made it with artist Tony Moore. This comic was a funny take on superheroes. It even became a short animated web series later on.

Creating Invincible

In 2003, Kirkman and artist Cory Walker created Invincible. This comic is about a teenager named Mark Grayson. He is the son of the world's strongest superhero. Mark starts to develop his own powers and becomes a hero too. Later, Ryan Ottley took over as the artist for Invincible.

The Walking Dead Begins

Soon after Invincible, Kirkman and Tony Moore started The Walking Dead in 2003. This comic tells the story of survivors in a world full of zombies. Kirkman once joked that he told Image Comics the zombies were part of an alien plot. He did this to get them to publish the series. Artist Charlie Adlard later became the main artist for The Walking Dead.

Working with Marvel Comics

Kirkman also worked for Marvel Comics. He wrote for popular series like Ultimate X-Men. He also created the comic series Marvel Zombies. In this series, Marvel superheroes become zombies. He also wrote Irredeemable Ant-Man.

Other Comic Projects

At Image Comics, Kirkman created The Astounding Wolf-Man with artist Jason Howard. He also worked with Todd McFarlane on the series Haunt. In 2008, Kirkman became a partner at Image Comics. This meant he stopped working as a freelance writer for Marvel.

Skybound Entertainment

In 2010, Robert Kirkman launched his own company. It is called Skybound Entertainment. He wanted to create new stories for comics, TV, and movies. In 2012, he received a special Innovator Award at the Saturn Awards. This was for his great work in adapting his comics to TV.

The Walking Dead TV show has also won many honors. It won Television Program of the Year by the American Film Institute in 2010 and 2012. It also won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup. This award is for amazing special effects makeup.

In 2020, Kirkman received a special award called "Fauve d'honneur". This was at the Angoulême International Comics Festival. It recognized his overall achievements in comics.
