Robert Meacham (1835–1902) was an important African-American leader in Florida during a time called Reconstruction. This was a period after the American Civil War when the country was rebuilding.

He was born in Quincy, Florida, and was enslaved. His enslaver was also his father, and he made sure Robert received an education. Robert saved money he received as gifts from his enslaver. He used this money to buy his own freedom and also the freedom of his mother.

Robert Meacham helped start the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Florida. He also worked as a minister in the church. He played a big part in writing Florida's new Constitution of 1868. This document helped set up the rules for how Florida would be governed.

Robert Meacham's Public Service

Early Political Roles

In 1868, Robert Meacham was chosen to be the clerk of the Circuit Court for Jefferson County, Florida. This job involved keeping official records for the court. The next year, he was named "superintendent of common schools." This meant he was in charge of the public schools in the area.

After two years in the school role, he became the postmaster of Monticello, Florida. Monticello was the main town in Jefferson County. In 1871, he was again appointed to lead the schools. He continued in this role for another two-year term.

Serving in the Legislature

Robert Meacham then won a seat in the Florida state legislature. He served as a state senator from 1868 until 1879. As a senator, he helped make laws for the state of Florida.

Later Life and Retirement

In 1880, he became the postmaster of Punta Gorda, Florida. He worked there for several years. In 1896, his health began to fail. He decided to retire and moved to Tampa. Robert Meacham passed away in 1902. He is remembered as a key figure who worked for freedom and education in Florida.
