Robert Peter Tristram Coffin (born March 18, 1892, died January 20, 1955) was an American poet, teacher, and writer. He won the famous Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1936. He also worked as the poetry editor for Yankee magazine.

Early Life and Education

Robert Peter Coffin was born on March 18, 1892. He grew up on a saltwater farm in Sebascodegan Island, Maine. He was the youngest of ten children in his family.

He went to Bowdoin College and earned his first degree in 1913. Later, he studied at Princeton University, getting his Master's degree in 1918. In 1922, he traveled to England as a Rhodes Scholar. There, he earned another special degree from Trinity College, Oxford.

A Life of Writing and Teaching

Robert Coffin served in the United States Army during World War I. After the war, he returned to teaching. He taught English at Wells College and later became a professor at Bowdoin College.

He loved poetry and helped other writers. He was a co-founder of the Writers' Conference of the University of New Hampshire. This conference was a place where writers could meet and learn. It was inspired by his friend, the famous poet Robert Frost.

Coffin was also an artist. He drew pictures for many of his own books.

Later Years

Robert Coffin passed away on January 20, 1955. He was 62 years old and died in Harpswell, Maine. He is buried in the Cranberry Horn Cemetery in Harpswell.
