Robert Person's Baseball Career
Robert grew up in University City, Missouri. He started playing college baseball at Seminole State College. At first, he played as an outfielder. His coach once bet that Robert had a stronger arm than the team's relief pitchers. Robert showed off his strong arm and won the bet for his coach! This led him to become a pitcher.
Joining Major League Baseball
The Cleveland Indians picked Robert in the 1989 MLB Draft. Later, he was traded to the Chicago White Sox in 1991. In 1992, the Florida Marlins chose him in a special draft. He then became a free agent and signed with the Marlins again.
In 1994, Robert was traded to the New York Mets. The Mets later traded him to the Toronto Blue Jays in 1996. He joined the Philadelphia Phillies in 1999. After the 2002 season, he played a short time for the Boston Red Sox. Injuries sometimes made it hard for Robert to play consistently.
Memorable Moments on the Mound
One of Robert Person's most famous games was on June 2, 2002. He was pitching for the Philadelphia Phillies against the Montreal Expos. He pitched five strong innings, allowing only one unearned run. But what made the game special was his hitting!
Robert hit two home runs in that game. His first home run was a "grand slam" in the first inning. This means he hit the ball out of the park when the bases were full of his teammates. So, four runs scored at once! Later, he hit another three-run home run. It was a truly amazing day for a pitcher to hit so well!
Best Pitching Season
Robert's best year as a pitcher was in 2000. He won 9 games and lost 7. His ERA (which shows how many runs he allowed per game) was 3.63. He also had 164 strikeouts that season. He was a very valuable player for his team that year.
Fan Club
While playing for the Philadelphia Phillies, Robert Person had his own fan club! It was called "Person's People." It shows how much fans enjoyed watching him play.
