Robert William Sennewald (born November 21, 1929 – died March 17, 2023) was a very important general in the United States Army. He served his country for many years, leading soldiers in different parts of the world.

Early Life and Education

Robert Sennewald was born on November 21, 1929, in St. Louis, Missouri. He was the only child of Ferdinand and Mabel Sennewald.

He went to Iowa State University and studied physical education. After graduating in 1951, he joined the Army. He became an officer through a program called the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). This program helps college students become military leaders. Iowa State University later honored him as a distinguished alumni.

Military Career

General Sennewald had many important jobs in the Army. He led different groups of soldiers. For example, he commanded the 6th Battalion of the 15th Artillery Regiment during the Vietnam War. He also led the 4th Infantry Division's artillery at Fort Carson, Colorado.

He served in Korea, helping to coordinate forces there. He also worked as a Deputy Commander for the United States Pacific Command. This role involved overseeing military operations across a large area.

From 1982 to 1984, General Sennewald held a very high position in Korea. He was the Commander in Chief of the United Nations Command. He also led the combined forces of South Korea and the U.S. Army there. On May 24, 1982, he was promoted to a four-star general. This is the highest rank a general can achieve.

After his time in Korea, he became the Commanding General of the United States Army Forces Command. He held this role from 1984 to 1986. This command is in charge of training and preparing most of the U.S. Army's forces.

General Sennewald retired from the Army in 1986. He passed away on March 17, 2023, at the age of 93.
