History of Rock Cut State Park

Early Native American Life

Long ago, in the 1600s, Native American tribes lived in this area. Some tribes, like the Mascouten, lived here from the mid-1600s to the early 1700s. Later, the Winnebago tribe made this land their home. In fact, the county where the park is located is named after them!

How the Park Was Created

After the Black Hawk War, this land became part of the United States. Later, people from Scotland, New York, and New England settled here. They even named a town nearby Harlem, just like the famous place in New York.

The idea for Rock Cut State Park came from a representative named Pierce from Rockford. He suggested creating the park in 1955. Just two years later, on October 25, 1957, Rock Cut State Park officially opened! The main fishing spot in the park, Pierce Lake, is named after him.
