History of Rock Hill Galleria
The Rock Hill Galleria opened its doors on May 16, 1991. A company called Zamias Services, Inc. built the mall.
Early Years and Anchor Stores
When it first opened, three of its main stores, known as 'anchor stores', moved from an older mall called Rock Hill Mall. These stores were Belk, JCPenney, and Sears. The old Rock Hill Mall closed in the early 1990s and was later taken down in 2008.
The Galleria also had two other big stores: Phar-Mor and Walmart. Phar-Mor closed after only one year. In October 1995, a store called Brendle's took its place. However, Brendle's also closed just six months later because the company had financial problems.
Changes and New Stores
The space where Phar-Mor and Brendle's used to be stayed empty for a long time, until 2004. Then, a store called Steve & Barry's opened there.
In 1998, another anchor store, Goody's, was added to the mall. Both Steve & Barry's and Goody's closed in 2008 and 2009. This happened because the companies that owned these stores also faced financial difficulties.
In 2013, the Belk store got a new look with renovations. The JCPenney store also became twice as big.
Recent Changes and Closures
In 2014, the old Goody's store became Home South Furniture. Also, a fun place called Revolutions, which had a bowling alley and a bar, opened in the space that used to be Phar-Mor and Steve & Barry's.
On November 8, 2018, it was announced that the Sears store at the mall would close in early 2019. This was part of a plan for Sears to close many of its stores. Both Revolutions and Home South Furniture also closed in early 2019.
On June 4, 2020, JCPenney announced that its store at Rock Hill Galleria would close. This was part of a plan to close many JCPenney stores across the country. After this, only Belk and Walmart remained as the main anchor stores at the mall.
