This interesting grass calls several states home. You can find it growing naturally in California, Oregon, Nevada, and Utah. It loves to live in mountain areas and high plateaus. These places often have a cool, alpine climate, which means they are high up and can be quite chilly.
What Does Rock Melic Look Like?
Rock melic is a perennial bunchgrass. This means it lives for more than two years and grows in clumps or bunches. It can grow to different heights, from about 10 centimeters (which is like a small ruler) up to 90 centimeters (almost a meter tall!).
Its flowers grow in a narrow cluster called an inflorescence. This cluster looks like a long, thin spike. The individual flower parts, called spikelets, are shaped like a "V". They often have cool green and purple stripes, making them quite pretty to look at up close.
