History of Rockbridge
The Rockbridge post office first opened in 1863. The community got its name from a special natural rock formation. This formation is called a natural bridge.
The Natural Bridge
The natural bridge is located to the east of the community. It is part of the Rockbridge State Nature Preserve. This bridge is made of sandstone. It is more than 100 feet (about 30 meters) long. The bridge is also 10 to 20 feet (about 3 to 6 meters) wide. It stretches over a deep ditch called a ravine. This ravine was formed by a small stream that flows into the Hocking River.
