Rodd Point is a cool suburb located in the Inner West area of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It's about 9 kilometres west of the main city centre, called the Sydney central business district. This area is managed by the City of Canada Bay local council.

Rodd Point sits right on the edge of Iron Cove, which is part of the Parramatta River. It's next to other suburbs like Five Dock and Russell Lea. You'll find a small island called Rodd Island in Iron Cove, just off the coast of Rodd Point. There's also a special memorial in Rodd Park, right next to the Dobroyd Aquatic Club. People sometimes just call Rodd Park "Point." A popular path called The Bay Run goes right past Rodd Park, and it's a favourite spot for people who love to jog, walk, or cycle.

Discovering Rodd Point's Past

Rodd Point got its name from the Rodd family, who were very important in this area for almost 100 years. Brent Clements Rodd (1809–1898) bought land here in 1836 from a big property called Five Dock Farm.

The Rodd Family's Influence

Brent Rodd had a large family with 12 children! Many of the streets nearby are named after them, like Brent, Brisbane, Burnell, Clements, Janet, Lenore, Rodd, Trevanion, and Undine. Barnstaple Road is named after Barnstaple Manor, which was the Rodd family's home. That name came from Brent's birthplace in Britain.

The Rodd Point memorial in Rodd Park was actually the Rodd family's burial place at first. But in 1903, their bodies were moved to Rookwood Cemetery.

Rodd Island's Story

Rodd Island, which is very close to Rodd Point, is also named after Brent Clements Rodd. In the 1800s, scientists sent by a famous person named Louis Pasteur used Rodd Island. They were trying to find ways to get rid of rabbits. After that, it became a place for fun and relaxation. Today, it's part of the Sydney Harbour National Park.

Sports and Fun at Rodd Point

Rodd Point is a great place for sports and outdoor activities, especially near the water!

Dobroyd Aquatic Club

The Dobroyd Aquatic Club started in 1937. They began their sailing activities from a spot in Haberfield. All kinds of boats were allowed to race there. In 1962, the government needed their land, so the club moved. A new clubhouse opened on October 8, 1964.

Sadly, in 2005, the building caught fire and burned down. All the members' boats were inside and were lost. The club had insurance for the building, so they could rebuild it. But the boats were not covered. People worked together to raise money to help club members buy new boats so they could keep sailing.
