Rodel (which is Roghadal in Scottish Gaelic) is a small village in Scotland. It's located on the southeastern coast of Harris, a beautiful island in the Outer Hebrides.
Rodel is part of the Harris area. A long time ago, it was the most important town on Harris. It was also the main port where ships would come and go. Later, another town called Tarbert became the main center.
Exploring Rodel
St Clement's Church
One of the most famous buildings in Rodel is St Clement's Church. This church was built in the 1500s, making it over 500 years old! It was started by the 8th Chief of the Clan MacLeod, a powerful family from the area. The church is named after Pope Clement I.
The church was built using strong, local rock called gneiss. This rock came from the nearby Isle of Lewis. St Clement's Church sits on a hill overlooking Loch Rodel, a pretty body of water. This old church is very well-preserved and is now looked after by Historic Scotland.
The Rodel Hotel
Near the harbor in Rodel, you'll find the Rodel Hotel. This building was first built in 1781. It was originally the home of Captain Alexander MacLeod of Berneray. He bought the entire Isle of Harris in 1779.
The hotel was fixed up in 2001, making it look new again. In 2016, it was sold to Anderson Bakewell and his wife Francine Stone.
