Rodrigo Zamorano (born in 1542, died in 1620) was a very smart Spanish expert who studied the Earth and the stars. He worked for King Philip II of Spain. He helped people understand how to navigate ships and explore the world.

Who Was Rodrigo Zamorano?

Rodrigo Zamorano was born in a city called Valladolid, Spain, in 1542. He became a famous cosmographer. A cosmographer is like a scientist who studies the universe, including the Earth, stars, and how to make maps. He was also a skilled mathematician and astronomer.

His Important Work

Zamorano wrote many important books. These books taught people about navigation (how to steer ships), astronomy (the study of stars and planets), calendars, and mathematics. His work was very helpful for sailors and explorers during his time.

He was even put in charge of the Casa de Contratación for a while. This was a very important Spanish government agency. It controlled all trade and exploration with the Americas.

Translating Euclid's Elements

In 1576, Rodrigo Zamorano translated a very old and famous math book into Spanish. This book was called "Euclid's Elements". It was written by a Greek mathematician named Euclid. This book is about geometry and has been used for thousands of years. Translating it helped many Spanish students learn about math.

His Legacy

Rodrigo Zamorano died in Seville, Spain, in 1620. His work continued to be important even after his death. An English mathematician named Edward Wright used some of Zamorano's ideas. Wright included a translation of Zamorano's book, Compendio de la Arte de Navegar (which means "Summary of the Art of Navigation"), in his own book called Certaine Errors in Navigation in 1599. This shows how Zamorano's knowledge helped sailors in other countries too.
