Roeland Park is a city in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. It is part of the larger Kansas City metropolitan area. In 2020, the city had a population of 6,871 people.
History of Roeland Park
The city of Roeland Park is named after John Roe. He was an immigrant from Ireland who settled on 267 acres (1.08 km2) of land in 1883. Part of this land is where Roeland Park stands today. John Roe's home was built in 1891. It was taken down in 1958 to build a road intersection.
The area that became Roeland Park began to be developed in 1905. It was planned as a "streetcar suburb" called Southridge. A streetcar suburb is a town that grew up along a streetcar line. People could live there and ride the streetcar to work in the city. William Strang developed this area. His Missouri and Kansas Interurban Railway ran through Roeland Park. It connected Rosedale to downtown Overland Park. More homes were built in this area during the late 1930s and 1940s. This happened as developers bought land from farmers and divided it into smaller plots.
Roeland Park officially became a city on July 2, 1951. This was led by developer Charles Vawter and his Roeland Park Homes Association. The city's borders grew between 1951 and 1959 through a series of land additions.
Roeland Park's first public swimming pool was built in 1958. The land for the pool was given by the Roe family. The new pool is located next to the Community Center at 4843 Rosewood Drive. The Community Center offers many programs all year. A special fabric dome covers the main pool from September to May. This allows people to use the pool even when it's cold outside.
In 2023, Michael Poppa was appointed as the mayor of Roeland Park. He took over from the previous mayor, Mike Kelly. Mike Kelly was elected to lead the Johnson County board of commissioners.
