Early Life and Education
Roger Enrico was born on November 11, 1944, in Chisholm, Minnesota. His parents had moved to the United States from Italy. He earned a special scholarship to attend Babson College, where he studied how to manage businesses. Later, Enrico joined the United States Navy and served his country during the Vietnam War.
His Career in Business
Enrico began his business journey at General Mills. There, he worked as a brand manager for Wheaties cereal. A brand manager helps to make a product popular and well-known.
In 1971, he joined PepsiCo. He helped market snacks like Funyuns, Cheetos, and Fritos. He also led PepsiCo's business in countries like Japan and in South America.
Leading Pepsi and Other Companies
In 1983, when he was 38 years old, Roger Enrico became the CEO of the Pepsi division of PepsiCo. He was known for making big marketing deals. For example, he signed famous singer Michael Jackson to a huge deal that year. Later, he also signed Lionel Richie.
From 1996 to 2001, Enrico was the Chairman of PepsiCo. He also served as the Chairman of DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. from 2004 to 2012. He was well known for his business competition with Roberto Goizueta, who was the CEO of Coca-Cola at the same time Enrico led Pepsi.
Beyond Business
Roger Enrico also cared about other important causes. He was a member of the board of directors for several organizations. These included the National Geographic Society, which explores and shares knowledge about the world. He also supported the Environmental Defense Fund, which works to protect nature, and the Solar Electric Light Fund, which helps bring solar power to people. He was also on the board of the American Film Institute, which celebrates movies.
His Passing
Roger Enrico passed away on June 1, 2016, at the age of 71. He was snorkeling in the Cayman Islands, where he had a home.
