He served as a member of the National Assembly, which is like the country's parliament, three times. Roh Hoe-chan was known for being part of several progressive political parties. These parties often focus on making society fairer and helping working people. His last party was the Justice Party, which he belonged to from 2012 until his death.
Early Life and Activism
Roh Hoe-chan grew up in Busan, South Korea. He was born into a middle-class family in 1956. In the 1970s, he went to Kyunggi High School, which is a well-known school. After high school, he went to college and became involved in political activities.
In 1982, Roh Hoe-chan started working as a welder in a factory. There, he helped organize the factory workers. He played a key role in forming a group called the Incheon Democratic Workers' Federation. This group aimed to create a political party for workers. In 1989, he was arrested by the government and spent 30 months in jail. This was because he was accused of breaking the National Security Act.
Political Career
After he was released from jail, Roh Hoe-chan continued his work in politics. In the 1990s, he helped create new progressive political parties. These parties later joined together to form the Democratic Labor Party in 2000.

Roh Hoe-chan became a member of the National Assembly for the first time in 2004. He served until 2008. Later, he helped start the New Progressive Party with other politicians like Sim Sang-jung. In 2010, he ran for Mayor of Seoul as a candidate for the New Progressive Party, but he did not win.
He was elected to the National Assembly again in 2012. This time, he represented the Unified Progressive Party and then the Justice Party. He later left the Unified Progressive Party. In October 2012, he helped create the Progressive Justice Party, which became the Justice Party in 2013.
In 2005, Roh Hoe-chan shared information about some prosecutors who were involved in cases with Samsung. He faced legal action for this. After a long legal process, he received a suspended sentence in 2013.
He was elected to the National Assembly for a third time in 2016. He was a member of the Justice Party at this time. In July 2018, he was part of an investigation.
Personal Life

Roh Hoe-chan enjoyed playing the cello since he was a child. He often dreamed of a society where everyone could learn to play a musical instrument.
Passing Away
Roh Hoe-chan passed away on July 23, 2018. His death happened while an investigation was taking place. He left a message for the Justice Party and its members. In his message, he mentioned receiving some money from an organization. He stated that he did not offer any special favors in return for this money.
After his death, Moon Jae-in, who was the President of South Korea at the time, said that Roh Hoe-chan had "made big contributions to widening the spectrum of [South] Korean politics." This means he helped bring more different ideas and voices into South Korean politics.
