Roman Petrovich Neustädter (Russian: Рома́н Петро́вич Нойште́дтер; born 18 February 1988) is a professional football player. He currently plays for Belgian First Division A club Westerlo.

Roman has a German background. He played for Germany's youth teams and then for the main German national team in 2012 and 2013. Later, in 2016, he decided to play for the Russian national team. Besides Germany and Russia, he could have also played for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, or Ukraine.

Roman often plays as a defensive midfielder or a centre-back. A defensive midfielder helps protect the defense, while a centre-back is a main defender. He prefers playing as a defensive midfielder. However, he often played as a centre-back when he was with the team Schalke.

About Roman's Life

Roman Neustädter's mother is Russian. His father's family were Volga Germans, who lived in the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union. After World War II, many ethnic Germans were moved by the Soviet government. Roman's family was moved to Central Asia.

His father, Peter Neustädter, was also a football player from Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. He played for Mainz 05. Roman was born in Dnipropetrovsk, which was in the Ukrainian SSR at the time. This was when his father was playing for Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk. Roman grew up with his mother and grandparents in Kyrgyzstan. Because of his family history and where he was born, Roman could have played for Germany, Ukraine, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, or Kazakhstan.

On May 30, 2016, Roman became a Russian citizen. He received his new Russian passport at the Russian Consulate in Bonn, Germany.

Roman's Football Journey

Roman Neustädter started his football journey in the youth team of Mainz 05. In July 2006, he moved up to their reserve team, Mainz 05 II. After playing for Mainz's main team in the 2008–09 season, he signed a three-year contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach.

With Mönchengladbach, he had a very good 2011–12 season. His team finished fourth, which meant they could play in the 2012–13 UEFA Champions League, a big European competition.

At the end of the 2011–12 season, Roman left Mönchengladbach. He joined Schalke 04 for free, signing a four-year contract that lasted until June 30, 2016.

In July 2016, Roman decided not to sign a new contract with Schalke. Instead, he signed a three-year deal with Fenerbahçe in Turkey.

On August 9, 2019, he signed a one-year contract with the Russian club Dynamo Moscow. He returned to Dynamo Moscow on October 15, 2020, to play until the end of that season.

Playing for His Country

Roman Neustädter played two games for the German Under-20 team. His first game was against Italy U-20 on April 9, 2008. He even scored a goal against Switzerland U-20 on April 22, 2008.

The Football Federation of Ukraine showed interest in having Roman play for their national team. Roman was born in the Ukrainian SSR, and he said he would likely play for Ukraine if asked. He would have needed a Ukrainian passport to do so.

On November 9, 2012, Roman was called up to the main German squad. He played in a friendly match against the Netherlands five days later. He made his debut for Germany in this game, coming on as a substitute.

In January 2016, Roman met with the Russian Football Union. He wanted to explore playing for the Russian national team in the future. On May 21, 2016, he was chosen to represent Russia at UEFA Euro 2016. Roman played his first game for Russia on June 1, 2016, in a friendly match against the Czech Republic. He started Russia's first two games in the Euro 2016 tournament, but Russia did not make it past the group stage.

On May 11, 2018, Roman was included in Russia's larger squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. However, he was not part of the final team that played in the World Cup.
