Roman Petrovich Neustädter (born on February 18, 1988) is a professional football player. He currently plays for the club Westerlo in Belgian First Division A.
Roman has a German background. He played for Germany's youth teams and later for the main German national team in 2012 and 2013. In 2016, he decided to play for the Russian national team instead. Besides Germany and Russia, Roman could have also played for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, or Ukraine.
Roman Neustädter often plays as a defensive midfielder or a centre-back. A defensive midfielder helps protect the defense, while a centre-back is a main defender. Even though he prefers playing as a defensive midfielder, he mostly played as a centre-back when he was with the club Schalke.

About Roman's Family and Background
Roman Neustädter's mother is Russian. His father's family were Volga Germans, who were Germans living in the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union. After World War II, many ethnic Germans were moved by the Soviet government. Roman's family was moved to Central Asia.
His father, Peter Neustädter, was also a football player from Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. He played for Mainz 05 and later managed their second team. Roman was born in Dnipropetrovsk, which was in the Ukrainian SSR at the time. This was when his father was playing for Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk. Roman was raised by his mother and grandparents in Kyrgyzstan while his father was still playing football. Because of his family history and where he was born, he could have played for Germany, Ukraine, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, or Kazakhstan in international games.
On May 30, 2016, Roman Neustädter became a Russian citizen. He received his new Russian passport at the Russian Consulate in Bonn, Germany.
Roman's Club Football Journey
Roman Neustädter started his football journey in the youth team of Mainz 05. In July 2006, he moved up to play for Mainz 05 II, which is their reserve team. After playing for Mainz's main team in the 2008–09 season, he signed a three-year contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach.
At Borussia Mönchengladbach, he had a very good 2011–12 season. His team finished fourth in the league, which meant they qualified for the 2012–13 UEFA Champions League, a big European competition.
After his contract ended in 2012, Neustädter left Mönchengladbach. He joined Schalke 04 on a free transfer, meaning no transfer fee was paid. He signed a four-year contract with Schalke.
In July 2016, Roman decided not to sign a new contract with Schalke. Instead, he moved to Turkey and signed a three-year deal with Fenerbahçe.
On August 9, 2019, he signed a one-year contract with the Russian club Dynamo Moscow. He later returned to Dynamo Moscow on October 15, 2020, to play for the rest of that season.
Since 2022, Roman has been playing for Westerlo in Belgium. He helped them win the Belgian First Division B title in the 2021–22 season.
Playing for His Country
Roman Neustädter played two games for the German Under-20 team. His first game was against Italy U-20 on April 9, 2008. He even scored a goal against Switzerland U-20 on April 22, 2008.
The Football Federation of Ukraine showed interest in having Roman play for their national team. Roman was born in the Ukrainian SSR and said he would likely accept if asked. However, he would have needed to get a Ukrainian passport first.
On November 9, 2012, Roman was called up to the German national team for a friendly match against the Netherlands. He made his debut for Germany in that game, coming on as a substitute.
In January 2016, Roman met with the Russian Football Union to discuss playing for the Russian national team. On May 21, 2016, he was chosen to represent Russia at UEFA Euro 2016. He played his first game for Russia on June 1, 2016, in a friendly match against the Czech Republic. He started in Russia's first two games at the Euro 2016 tournament, but Russia did not make it past the group stage.
He was also included in Russia's larger squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup but was not part of the final team.

Roman Neustädter has scored one goal for the Russian national team:
- On October 14, 2018, he scored against Turkey in Sochi, Russia. The final score was 2–0 for Russia in a 2018–19 UEFA Nations League B match.
