Roman Ridge facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Roman Ridge is a special part of an ancient Roman road called Ermine Street. You can find it in the Doncaster area of South Yorkshire, England. This old road was built by the Romans a very long time ago!

What is the Roman Ridge?

The Roman Ridge is a section of a much longer Roman road. This road, Ermine Street, was very important in Roman times. It helped people travel and move goods across Britain. Even today, parts of Ermine Street follow modern roads like the Great North Road (now called the A638).

Where Can You Find It?

The Roman Ridge is a specific stretch of this old road. It runs between two places called Sunnyfields and Red House. It's a bit like a shortcut that the Romans built.

The Roman Ridge starts near the "Sun Inn" junction. This is where the A638 road meets the A635 (also known as Barnsley Road). From there, the Roman Ridge cuts across the land. It runs to the west of the A638 road, staying roughly parallel to it.

It goes through the village of Sunnyfields. Then it crosses Green Lane in Scawsby, which is on the edge of Little Canada. After that, it continues along the western side of the villages of Highfields and Woodlands. Finally, it reaches the Red House junction of the Great North Road. From Red House, the Roman Ridge joins the A1 road (part of the Great North Road) all the way to Barnsdale.

What's in a Name?

People often call the Roman Ridge by a slightly different name. You might hear it called the Roman Rigg. Both "ridge" and "rigg" mean a long, narrow raised strip of land. This name probably comes from how the old road looks today.
