Romesh Chandra (born March 30, 1919 – died July 4, 2016) was an important leader from India. He was part of the Communist Party of India, a political group. He helped India gain its freedom from British rule when he was a student leader. Later, he became the president of the World Peace Council, an organization that works for peace around the world.

Romesh Chandra was born on March 30, 1919. His birthplace was Lyallpur in British India. This area is now called Faisalabad in Pakistan. He studied in Lahore and then at Cambridge University in England.

Early Life and Student Days

From 1934 to 1941, Romesh Chandra was the chairman of a students' union in Lahore. This means he led a group of students. In 1939, he joined the Communist Party of India. He played a part in India's fight for freedom.

Working for Peace

Romesh Chandra was very involved in working for peace. In 1952, he became the General Secretary of the All-India Peace Council. This group worked to promote peace within India.

A year later, in 1953, he joined the World Peace Council. This is a global organization that aims to stop wars and promote peace. He became its General Secretary in 1953. Later, in 1977, he was chosen as its president.

Romesh Chandra spoke many times at the United Nations. The United Nations is a big organization where countries talk about global issues. He spoke there more than any other person from India.

Awards and Recognition

For his work, Romesh Chandra received several awards:

  • In 1964, the World Peace Council gave him the F. Joliot-Curie Gold Peace Medal.
  • In 1968, the Soviet Union honored him with the International Lenin Prize for Strengthening Peace among Nations.
  • In 1975, he received another award from the Soviet Union, the Order of Friendship of Peoples.

In 2000, at a meeting in Athens, Greece, Romesh Chandra was named "President of Honour" of the World Peace Council.

Later Life

Romesh Chandra was married and had a son named Firoze Chandra. He passed away on July 4, 2016, in Mumbai, India. He was 97 years old.
