Romualdas Ozolas's Political Journey
Joining Sąjūdis: A Push for Freedom
Romualdas Ozolas had a very clear goal for Lithuania: he wanted it to be a completely independent country. He dreamed of a nation free from outside control.
He was a key member of a group called Sąjūdis. This group worked to bring Lithuania's independence to life. People knew him well, and he had strong ideas about politics. His friends said he was the one who brought people together to work for independence.
Serving in Parliament: 1989–2000
In 1989, Romualdas Ozolas was elected to the parliament of Lithuania. He was supported by the Sąjūdis movement. He served as a representative until 1990.
From 1990 to 1991, he held a very important job. He was the Deputy Prime Minister of Lithuania.
Later, in 1992, he was elected to the Seimas. The Seimas is Lithuania's main parliament. He served there until the year 2000.
Leading Political Parties
Romualdas Ozolas also helped create new political groups. In 1992, he and his supporters formed the Lithuanian Centre Movement. This group later became a political party called the Lithuanian Centre Union in 1993. He was the leader of this party until 2000.
From 2003 to 2007, he led another party. It was first called the National Centre Party. In 2005, its name changed to the Lithuanian Centre Party.
Views on Lithuania's Independence
Romualdas Ozolas strongly believed in Lithuania's full independence. He thought that joining the European Union might limit Lithuania's freedom. He felt it was important for the country to have unlimited control over its own decisions.
He also did not support Lithuania joining the eurozone. This is the group of countries that use the euro currency.
In 2013, he talked about how things had changed. He said that in the 1990s, the goal was an independent national country. He felt that joining international unions like the EU changed those original values.

Romualdas Ozolas also wrote several books:
