Ronald Earle Glass (born July 10, 1945 – died November 25, 2016) was an American actor. He was well-known for playing Detective Ron Harris in the TV show Barney Miller (1975–1982). He also played the wise Shepherd Book in the science fiction series Firefly (2002) and its movie Serenity (2005).

Early Life and Education
Ron Glass was born in Evansville, Indiana. His parents were Lethia and Crump Glass.
After finishing St. Francis Seminary in 1964, Ron went to the University of Evansville. There, he earned a degree in both drama and literature. Years later, his university gave him a special award called the Medal of Honor. Ron said in 2007 that he knew he wanted to be an actor while he was in college. With encouragement from a teacher, he acted in a play, which led him to a career in acting.
Becoming an Actor
Ron Glass first acted on stage at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After that, he moved to Hollywood to work in television.
His first TV appearances were in shows like Sanford and Son in 1972, Hawaii Five-O in 1973, and All in the Family in 1973. He also appeared in Good Times in 1974.
Famous TV Roles
In 1975, Ron Glass got a big role as Detective Ron Harris in the TV show Barney Miller. This popular show ran for many years, until 1982.
After Barney Miller, Ron Glass starred with Demond Wilson in a new version of The Odd Couple, called The New Odd Couple. In 1985, he played a devil in an episode of The Twilight Zone. In 1992, he was in the show Rhythm and Blues.
In 1996, Ron Glass played Roland Felcher, a history teacher, in the NBC show Mr. Rhodes. In 1999, he appeared in two episodes of the famous show Friends. He played Russell, Ross Geller's divorce lawyer.
Later Career and Voice Acting
Ron Glass appeared in many other TV shows. These included Family Matters and Teen Angel, where he played God's cousin Rod. He also had a guest role in the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Nightingale".
He was a regular actor in the science fiction series Firefly (2002). He also starred in its movie sequel, Serenity (2005). In these, he played Derrial Book, a spiritual "Shepherd" with a mysterious past.
Ron Glass also used his voice for cartoon characters. He was the voice of Randy Carmichael for the Nickelodeon shows All Grown Up! and Rugrats. He also voiced the character Garth in the video game Fable II. In 2008, he was in the movie Lakeview Terrace with Samuel L. Jackson. In 2010, he starred in the movie Death at a Funeral as Duncan.
Personal Life
Ron Glass never got married. He practiced Buddhism and was a member of Soka Gakkai International. He passed away on November 25, 2016, at the age of 71, due to breathing problems. He is buried at the Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California.
