A Brief History of Roodhouse
Roodhouse was started in the 1850s by a person named John Roodhouse. At first, the community was called "The Crossroads." This name made sense because it was located where two important roads met. Later, the town was renamed Roodhouse, after its founder.
In 1860, a man named John Rawlins helped convince the Chicago and Alton Railway to build a train station in Roodhouse. He promised to help raise money locally for the station and a warehouse. This was a big deal for the town!
The railway then built a new branch line from Roodhouse in 1871. This made Roodhouse a very important train junction, meaning many train lines met there. Because of the railway, more people moved to Roodhouse, and its economy grew a lot. Roodhouse officially became a city in 1880.
However, passenger train service to Roodhouse stopped in the 1950s. This caused the local economy to slow down, and the city faced challenges for many years after that.
One important building from the railroad days that is still standing is the Hotel Roodhouse. It's the only hotel left from that time and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's a special historical landmark.
