History of Ropes Crossing
Ropes Crossing was once part of the nearby suburb of St Marys. The name "Ropes Crossing" comes from a place where people crossed Ropes Creek. This creek is about 23 kilometers long. It flows north into South Creek. The creek itself was named after Anthony Rope. He was an early settler who arrived in Australia with the First Fleet. It is thought he was given land along this creek.
World War II and the Railway
The area was once a special site during World War II. It was used for making and storing military supplies. This place was later known as Australian Defence Industries (ADI). The area even had its own railway line. This train line was made electric in 1957.
The railway line first opened on May 1, 1942. It ran from St Marys to Dunheved. Later, on June 29, 1942, the line was extended to Ropes Creek. A new station called Cochrane opened on September 2, 1957. The line was mostly used for moving military supplies. It also had morning and afternoon trains for workers at the munitions factory.
