Roscoe Dash's Music Journey
Starting a Music Career (2002–2009)
Jeffrey Johnson started rapping when he was 12 years old. His older brother showed him the world of hip-hop music. While he was in Mill Creek High School, he formed a rap group. The group was called Black Out Boiz. Jeffrey used the stage name "ATL" during this time.
The group released one music project that people liked. But Jeffrey decided to leave the group to work on his own music. His first solo project, My Turn, was released on MySpace. He kept recording music in his basement. This led him to connect with his cousin, Torrey Hood. Torrey was managing a local hip-hop group called Travis Porter.
Jeffrey began to tour and record with Travis Porter. He also started talking about a contract with their manager, Charlie Jabaley. On August 1, 2009, Travis Porter's second mixtape, I'm a Differenter 2, came out. An early version of Jeffrey's song, "All the Way Turnt Up", was on it. Even though Jeffrey wrote and performed the song, he was only listed as a guest. He was credited as "ATL."
Jeffrey knew he needed his own identity to grow his career. He looked up names of comic book heroes online. He found the name "Roscoe Dash." He said he needed a name that would make people curious. He wanted them to want to learn more about Roscoe Dash.
Later in 2009, he met a local business person named LA da Boomman. LA da Boomman signed him to his company, Making Moves Inc. (MMI). Jeffrey then signed a deal with A&R representative Anthony Tate. He also joined Zone 4, a label connected to Interscope Records. This happened after Tate and Jeffrey talked with music producer Polow da Don, who started Zone 4.
First Album and EP (2010–2013)
After its first release, Roscoe Dash re-recorded "All the Way Turnt Up." He added a part from fellow Atlanta rapper Soulja Boy. This new version became popular on the radio. Roscoe Dash then signed with Interscope Records before the song was officially released on January 1, 2010.
Roscoe Dash then started recording his first full album, Ready Set Go!. However, the album was leaked and sent out before its official release date. The next year, Roscoe Dash was featured on the song "No Hands" by Waka Flocka Flame, along with Wale. This song received a 'diamond' award from the RIAA. It reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also won "Club Banger of the Year" at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards. Roscoe Dash also received a nomination at the ASCAP Music Awards in 2011.
In December 2011, Roscoe Dash released his first short album, or extended play (EP), called J.U.I.C.E.. He also appeared on Big Sean's song "Marvin & Chardonnay." This song reached the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2012, Roscoe Dash was on the cover of XXL magazine. He was part of their "Top 10 Freshmen list." Other rappers on the list included Iggy Azalea, Danny Brown, Kid Ink, Future, Hopsin, Macklemore, French Montana, Don Trip, and Machine Gun Kelly.
New Music and Mixtapes (2014–Present)
On August 29, 2014, Roscoe Dash released a mixtape called The Appetizer. DJ Fly Guy hosted this mixtape. In June 2015, Dash released a song called "Catch A Body." This song is from his upcoming album, Dash Effect 2. He is working with new management and hopes to make a big return to music. In March 2016, Dash released another new mixtape called Glitch. His DJ at the time, DJ Fly Guy, presented and hosted it.
Songwriting Credit Claims
On September 20, 2012, Roscoe Dash said on Twitter that he helped write songs. He claimed he was not given credit for his work on G.O.O.D. Music's album Cruel Summer. He also said he helped write Wale's song "Lotus Flower Bomb" with Miguel. Wale responded to this on Twitter. Miguel also made a statement to Complex magazine.
