Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Rose Kaumai Mackwelung (born in 1912, died in 1985) was a very important teacher and leader on the island of Kosrae. Kosrae is part of the Federated States of Micronesia. Many people called her "the mother of education in Kosrae." This means she helped start and improve schools there.

Early Life and Learning

Rose Mackwelung was born in 1912 in a place called Kiribati. Back then, it was a British colony. When she was only three years old, an American missionary named Jessie Rebecca Hoppin adopted her. A missionary is someone who travels to teach about their religion. Jessie Hoppin had taught Rose's parents in a school.

Rose lived with her adoptive mother in different places. These included Jaluit Atoll and the island of Kosrae. In 1922, when she was about 10, she moved to the United States. She finished her schooling there, in California.

Starting Her Career

Rose Mackwelung is known as the person who started "formal education" on Kosrae. Formal education means organized schooling, like we have today. People encouraged her to stay in the United States. They told her she could even go to nursing school, even though her skin was dark.

But in 1932, she chose to return to Micronesia. She first taught on Jaluit. Then, she taught at the Mwot Protestant Mission School on Kosrae for eight years. After that, she spent three years teaching at a Japanese school on the island.

Leading Education and Women's Rights

After World War II, Rose Mackwelung took on bigger roles in education. She created a program to train teachers. She also helped set up the school system for the whole island of Kosrae. In 1947, she became the island's superintendent of schools. This meant she was in charge of all the schools.

In 1952, she became the supervisor for adult education in Pohnpei. This role involved helping adults continue their learning.

Rose strongly believed in women's roles in society. In 1971, she said, "If you ask me what Micronesia needs the most, the answer would be that we need more women educated." She was seen as the first Micronesian woman to have a public career while also being a homemaker.

Working Across the Islands

Rose Mackwelung became well-known beyond Kosrae. She worked in Pohnpei and the Marshall Islands. She helped create women's groups in the region. One example is the Ponape Women's Association, started in 1955.

From 1957, she advised the leader of Ponape District on money and politics. At that time, Kosrae was part of Ponape District. From 1965 until she retired in 1974, she was the district's women's affairs officer. This job focused on helping women. She also traveled to different meetings around the world. In 1964, she was the first woman to get a special award from the United Nations for community development.

Later Life and Legacy

Even though she had a strict Christian upbringing and worked in missionary schools for many years, Rose Mackwelung later joined the Baháʼí Faith. She retired and moved back to Kosrae. She passed away there in 1985 when she was 73 years old.

In 1994, a new public library was built in Tofol, Kosrae. It was named the Rose Mackwelung Library to honor her important work.
