Dr. Roshan Lal Anand (Hindi: पद्म श्री डॉ. रोशन लाल आनंद), also known as Dr. R. L. Anand, was an important Indian sports administrator. He was born on January 19, 1924. He served as the second Secretary General of the Asian Handball Federation from 2000 to 2013.

Who is Dr. Roshan Lal Anand?

Dr. Roshan Lal Anand dedicated his life to sports. He helped organize and develop sports, especially handball, in India and across Asia. He held many top positions in different sports organizations.

Early Life and Important Roles

Roshan Lal Anand was born on January 19, 1924, in a part of India that was then called Punjab Province, British India.

He became the Director of the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NIS) on July 4, 1970. He worked in this role for 16 years, which is the longest anyone has served as Director there. He retired from this position on November 30, 1986.

Leading Sports Organizations

Dr. Anand held several key leadership roles in sports. He helped manage and grow different sports federations.

Asian Handball Federation

On November 26, 2000, Dr. Anand was chosen as the Secretary General of the Asian Handball Federation. He took over from Syed Abul Hassan. He worked in this important role for 13 years. His term ended on October 25, 2013, when Muhammad Shafiq became the new Secretary General.

Indian Olympic Association

Dr. Anand was also elected as the Secretary General of the Indian Olympic Association from 1986 to 1987. After that, he served as the Vice-President of the Indian Olympic Association. This organization helps prepare Indian athletes for the Olympic Games.

Handball Federation of India

Dr. Anand was one of the people who helped start the Handball Federation of India (HFI). He was elected as the President of HFI in 1985. He served as President until 2010. He chose not to run for the position again because of his age. He is the longest-serving President of HFI. Because of his many years of service to handball, he was made the Life-President of the Handball Federation of India in 2010. He will hold this special title for the rest of his life.

Other Important Roles

Besides his work in India and Asia, Dr. Anand also served as the President of the Commonwealth Handball Association. He was also a member of the Arbitration Commission of the International Handball Federation. These roles showed his influence in handball around the world.

Awards and Recognition

Dr. Anand's hard work and dedication to sports were recognized with a very special award.

He received the Padma Shri award in 1976. The Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian award given by the Government of India. It is a great honor for people who have done excellent work in their field.
