About Roslyn's Location
Roslyn is a very small town. It covers an area of about 0.56 square kilometers (or 0.22 square miles). All of this area is land, meaning there are no large lakes or rivers within the town limits.
A Look at Roslyn's Past
The town of Roslyn got its name from an older settlement called Old Roslyn. This older place was set up in 1882. It had a post office and was a place where people could trade goods.
One story says that H.H. Russell, the first postmaster, named it after his hometown in Scotland. Another idea is that the name Roslyn comes from combining the names of two nearby lakes, Rosholt and Lynn.
The Railroad Arrives
A big change happened in 1914 when the Soo Line Railroad started building tracks in the area. The people living nearby wanted the railroad to come through their community. They worked together and raised $60,000 to make it happen.
Because of the railroad, a new town site was chosen. On August 17, 1914, this "New Roslyn" was officially planned out. A main street was created, and the town began to grow around the new railroad line. Over time, Old Roslyn was no longer used.
