Roy Gater (born June 22, 1940 – died May 1, 2017) was an English footballer. He played as a half-back, which is a position in the middle of the field. Roy Gater had a long career playing for several teams, including Port Vale, Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic, and Crewe Alexandra. He played in over 400 games during his 13 years in the Football League.

Roy Gater's Football Journey

Roy Gater started his football career in the youth team at Port Vale. He became a professional player in April 1960.

Starting at Port Vale

Roy made his first professional game on April 4, 1961, against Coventry City. He played a few more games for Port Vale in the Third Division. He was also part of the team that won the Supporters' Clubs' Trophy. After playing only a few games for Port Vale, he moved to another club in June 1962.

Time with Bournemouth

Roy Gater joined Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in 1962. He spent six years playing for Bournemouth. During his time there, he played in 216 league games and scored three goals. The team finished in good positions in the Third Division during these years, including fifth and fourth place.

Playing for Crewe Alexandra

After leaving Bournemouth, Roy moved to Crewe Alexandra. He played for Crewe for five years. While at Crewe, he scored five goals in 156 league games. The team faced some tough seasons during his time there, including being relegated to the Fourth Division.

Later Career and Coaching

After his time in the Football League, Roy Gater played for other teams in the Southern League. These teams included Weymouth and Dorchester Town. He also played for Christchurch, where he took on a new role as a player-manager. This meant he was both a player and a manager at the same time.

After he stopped playing, Roy continued his involvement in football as a coach at Poole Town. He later returned to Christchurch to become their manager.
